Trekking Hours: 4-5 hours
At 9am, leave Moshi for Machame Gate, where you will meet the Kilimanjaro Trekking Guides, porters, guides, and cooks that will spend the next seven days trekking with you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The drive through coffee farms and villages to Machame Gate takes about 1.5 hours. Once you arrive, wait at the gate while Kilimanjaro Trekking Guides registers your trek and the porters and guides make final preparations. Your first day's destination is Machame Camp. Trek through the moss-covered trees of Kilimanjaro's cloud forest, with stunning views of Kibo Peak if the weather is clear.
Trekking Hours: 6-7 hours
Considered to be the easiest day on the Machame Route, today's trek includes several uphill sections. Carry plenty of drinking water, as the exposed trek can be hot on a clear day. Enjoy viewpoints showing the plains and forests below, and Kibo and Mawenzi peaks above. The high altitude plants, Scenecio Kilimanjaro and Lobelia deckenii, mark the change in vegetation. After lunch, trek the Shira Plateau and continue to Shira Camp for the night.
Trekking Hours: 6-7 hours
This day involves up and down trekking, ending with an elevation gain of just 110 meters. However, by the early afternoon, you will have trekked to 4,530 meters before descending to Barranco Camp. After breakfast, trek east on the Shira Plateau and reach the junction for the Shira and Lemosho Routes. Continue through a barren landscape, then stop for lunch. Afterward, reach the highest point of the day before descending to Barranco Camp. For faster trekkers, a detour via the Lava Tower is possible. Barranco Camp is known for being the most scenic campsite on the Machame Route.
Trekking Hours: 3-4 hours
Leave Barranco Camp for Karanga Valley. The day starts with a 1.5-hour scramble up Barranco Wall, the hardest part of the day. After reaching the top, descend into the greener Karanga Valley. We camp on the ridge above the valley for greater acclimatization.
Trekking Hours: 3-4 hours
After breakfast, trek to Barafu Camp, where you will view several of Kibo's glaciers and the junction connecting the Mweka descent route with the Machame trail. Along the way, pass the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers, and prepare for the ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Trekking Hours: 11-14 hours
Begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak at midnight. After sunrise, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp to rest and acclimatize.
Trekking Hours: 3-4 hours
After breakfast, descend to Mweka Gate to receive your summit certificate. From there, head back to Moshi to celebrate your achievement.
